“We tried. We stood together. We reached the target.
Some battles, despite everything, are not ours to win.”
Soumiparna Mitra was an 18-year-old girl from Subhasgram who had been fighting Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) for five long, exhausting years. Through rounds of chemotherapy, hospital visits, and moments of fragile hope, she and her family persevered with quiet dignity.
By late 2024, her doctors determined that a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) was her only path forward. The procedure was scheduled for November 2024 at N.R.S. Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata under a veteran specialist. Every day of delay was a risk.
The estimated cost of treatment stood at approximately ₹11 Lakhs — a sum far beyond what her family, led by her mother Monimala Mitra, could arrange alone. Monimala reached out to Youth Forum in writing, with a plea that moved every member who read it.
Youth Forum, Subhasgram immediately mobilised. We drafted a formal appeal letter and reached out to organisations, businesses, and individuals — requesting support either through direct donations or by spreading awareness. We shared Soumiparna's story with full medical transparency and provided bank details for all who wished to contribute.
The response from the community was humbling. People who had never met Soumiparna gave generously. Our members volunteered their time, contacts, and energy. The campaign spread beyond Subhasgram — to people who simply believed a young girl deserved a chance.

Together, we raised the funds needed for Soumiparna's treatment.

Every rupee collected went directly toward Soumiparna's Bone Marrow Transplant. The community of Subhasgram — and beyond — showed what collective compassion looks like.
Soumiparna did not survive the treatment. She passed away in 2024.

Despite everything — the funds raised, the procedure, the prayers, the collective will of an entire community — Soumiparna could not be saved. Some battles, no matter how hard we fight, are not ours to win.
We grieve with her mother, Monimala Mitra, and everyone who loved her. And we carry her forward — in the belief that showing up for each other, even when outcomes are uncertain, is never the wrong thing to do.
Soumiparna, you were surrounded by people who cared. That will always be true.
Youth Forum documents this campaign not to claim credit, but to bear witness. Soumiparna's story is a reminder that serious illness can reach any family — and that community response, when it comes together, can move mountains even if it cannot change every outcome.
Her case also underscores the importance of stem cell and bone marrow donation awareness — an area Youth Forum has since incorporated into our annual Saraswati Puja programmes. More donors on the registry means more lives that can be saved before it is too late.

AML is an aggressive blood cancer that affects the bone marrow. A Bone Marrow Transplant is often the only curative option, requiring a compatible donor and significant resources.
Registering as a bone marrow donor costs nothing and can save a life.
In Soumiparna's memory — consider registering as a stem cell or bone marrow donor. It takes minutes and can save a life.
