A Day That Saved Lives — Blood Donation Camp, May 2025

On the morning of 1st May 2025, the Subhasgram community woke up with purpose. Youth Forum, in collaboration with Ruby General Hospital, organized one of the largest blood donation camps in the South 24 Parganas district — and the response was overwhelming.

By the end of the day, over 75 units of blood had been collected from generous donors — local residents, students, professionals, and first-time donors who overcame their hesitation to step forward for a cause bigger than themselves.

Why Blood Donation Matters

India faces a shortage of 3 million units of blood every year. A single unit of blood can save up to three lives. Blood banks — especially in semi-urban districts like South 24 Parganas — often run critically low, leaving hospitals unable to treat accident victims, cancer patients, and mothers during childbirth.

Youth Forum recognized this gap early on. Our goal was simple: bring the donation camp to the community, rather than waiting for individuals to travel to a distant hospital.

How It Happened

Our volunteers — numbering over 30 on the ground — began preparations a week before the camp. They canvassed the area, put up banners, made announcements at local meetings, and coordinated logistics with Ruby General Hospital's medical team.

  • Tents, chairs, and refreshments were arranged for donors.
  • A medical team from Ruby General Hospital was present to screen and collect blood safely.
  • Youth Forum volunteers managed registration, crowd flow, and post-donation care.
  • Certificates of appreciation were distributed to each donor.

The Impact

The 75+ units collected were immediately dispatched to Ruby General Hospital's blood bank, where they will directly benefit patients in critical care — including thalassemia patients, accident victims, and surgical cases.

"I was nervous at first," said one first-time donor, a 22-year-old student from Subhasgram. "But the Youth Forum team made it so easy. Now I feel like I may have saved someone's life today."

What's Next

Youth Forum is committed to organizing quarterly blood donation camps across South 24 Parganas. We are also actively partnering with DKMS for stem cell donor awareness — helping patients like Soumiparna Mitra find bone marrow matches.
